About Me

working with kids to learn DSLR photography

I gave my son his first digital camera for his second birthday. Now that he is eight, we have upgraded from the toy camera to one of my older DSLR camera. He has come a long way as a photographer and has even begun learning how to do things with that camera that I hadn't even learned how to do. Learning how to take photos with a DSLR camera with my son has been fun, interesting and a time that I will cherish forever. We have created this blog to share everything that we have learned during our learning adventure.

Newborn Photography: What To Expect And How To Prepare For A Successful Photo Shoot

The birth of a child is a treasured moment in the life of a parent, and capturing the essence of those first days and weeks of a baby's life is important. Unfortunately, the birth of a child is also a busy time, and it can be easy to overlook the importance of preserving those precious early memories. Knowing when to schedule a newborn photo shoot and what to expect when your photographer arrives will help your session to be a success.

Schedule in advance

One mistake a parent often makes is to neglect scheduling a newborn session until after the baby is born. This is typically due to the busyness that comes with preparing for the baby's arrival and the uncertainty of when the baby will arrive. Scheduling well in advance will help you secure a spot so you do not miss your child's arrival or firsts in life.

Meeting your photographer in advance is important if you wish to have delivery photos included in your session. In this meeting you can discuss availability and any restrictions your medical facility may have. It also gives you a chance to see if you feel comfortable with your photographer.

Selecting clothing

Simple clothing is best for newborn photography shoots. After all, you do not want the clothing to distract from your precious newborn's face or any expressions you want to capture. Stripes or other bold designs should be avoided entirely because they will become the focal point of the picture rather than your child.

Gray, beige, and soft shades of pink or blue are fine for clothing. Choose a few simple outfits for best results. Changing outfits too many times will be tiring for you and the baby.

Including family and pets

Lifestyle sessions may include other family members and pets. The goal is to obtain photos that reflect your normal daily lifestyle. Choose clothing that is comfortable and casual to best capture your normal life at home.

Expect your photographer to take several photos in the nursery and other main areas of the home. Decluttering and preparing these areas of the home prior to your baby's birth will help to ensure these areas are ready for your photo shoot when the time arrives.

Preparing ahead of time for a newborn photo shoot is the first step to making sure you do not miss those special days and weeks of your newborn child's life. A newborn photography session is sure to capture your heart and give you plenty of precious baby portraits you will cherish for the rest of your life.
